Rand Paul says his father’s backers are not “enemies” of GOP

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is urging Iowa Republicans to consider the people who support his father’s bid for president as friends rather than “enemies.”

“They’re not people with two heads. Some of them are new to the party. Some of them have been in the party a long time. Some of them may have beat your friend for a party position and you don’t like it, but we’re all in this together,” Paul said early this evening in suburban Des Moines. “And the one thing that my dad, I think, has done is helped the party. He’s brought new people into the party.”

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, his father, finished third in Iowa’s Caucuses this past January and the congressman’s supporters now occupy key positions within the Iowa Republican Party leadership. In addition, it appears Paul supporters will occupy most of the slots in the Iowa Republican Party’s delegation at the national convention this summer.

“Sometimes people don’t recognize the good for wanting to dwell on the bad…We are on the same side of a lot of the issues,” Paul said. “…There’s more registered Republicans (in Iowa) than at any time in the past six years and I think that’s an important point. The new people aren’t hurting the party. They’re helping to grow the party.”

This Week In News For Senator Rand Paul – April 20, 2012

Dear Friend,

I spent the week working tirelessly in our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C, before returning to Kentucky to meet with constituents today. Below you will find an update on the past week.

Eliminate Foreign Aid To Egypt

I took to the Senate floor to re-introduce my proposed amendment to eliminate foreign aid to Egypt until the Egyptian government ceases the prosecution of U.S. citizens. The amendment also recoups the bail money paid to free the American pro-democracy workers last month. You can click HERE or on the picture below to watch video of my floor speech.

Following my attempt to introduce this amendment, I issued a letter to President Barack Obama highlighting the State Department’s release of foreign aid funds to Egypt, which I previously urged against doing in a March 15 letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In this letter to President Obama, I strongly urged the President to reverse his State Department’s decision to send aid to Egypt, and to hold all aid until the politically motivated prosecution of U.S. citizens has ended. You can read the letter by clicking HERE.

Taxpayers Outraged by the GSA’s Wasteful Spending

In light of recent news reports about extravagant spending by government agencies, I issued a letter to House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) requesting an investigation into special permissions granted by the Administration for government agency conferences. Click HERE to read a copy of my letter to Chairman Issa.

Buffett Tax Hike

This week, Americans’ final tax bill for 2011 will be due. We will also celebrate “Tax Freedom Day,” where Americans finally stop working to send money to Washington and start keeping some for themselves. That’s why it’s appalling that Senate Democrats chose this week to show how out of touch with America they are by demanding a vote to increase taxes on our nation’s job creators.

Surely our nation’s tax system is broken and in dire need of reform. Yet, the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats’ idea of reform is a Buffett Tax hike that has nothing to do with balancing our budget, lowering unemployment or simplifying the tax code – but everything to do with funding more reckless spending in Washington.

If we are going to solve our nation’s debt crisis, restore the struggling economy, and put people back to work we need the kind of reform in this country that simplifies the tax code and reduces the burden for everyone, instead of going in the opposite direction as the Obama Administration has shown in promoting this convoluted legislation.

Roundtable with the National Association of Manufacturers

I met with members of the National Association of Manufacturers from all across Kentucky at GM’s Corvette plant in Bowling Green for a “Congressional Dialogue.” Whether they manufacture paper or high performance sports cars, plant managers are concerned about the regulatory environment, tax policies and workforce issues. We had a very candid conversation about the challenges they face and some of the legislative initiatives I am working on in DC to bring about some relief. I really enjoy the give-and-take of this type of meeting and always learn a great deal from leaders in their fields.

Sen. Rand Paul Congratulates Sacketts on victory over EPA

Supreme Court Calls on Congress to Clarify Scope of Clean Water Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the Supreme Court of the United States issued its opinion in the case Sackett v. EPA, in a 9-0 decision, providing some measure of relief to those who wish to challenge the heavy-handed enforcement of an out-of-control Environmental Protection Agency.

“From this point forward, citizens like the Sacketts will be able to challenge the EPA in court before huge fines and other actions are levied against them,” Sen. Paul said. “This sends a resounding message to the Administration that ever-expanding bureaucracy and regulations cannot continue to go unchecked. I will continue to fight to rein in the EPA, and today’s decision is heartening that we will succeed.”

The court did not however take a stand against the larger abuses of the EPA. Rather, in a concurring opinion, Justice Samuel Alito specifically called on Congress to fix the law and clarify the definition of navigable waters, stating that “only clarification of the reach of the Clean Water Act can rectify the underlying problem.”

Sen. Paul’s bill, S. 2122, the Defense of Environment and Property Act of 2012, is the only legislation that would address these concerns and comply with the directions of the court in the Sackett case.

Senator Rand Paul Steps Up to Protect Property Owners from Outlaw Federal Agencies

U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has just introduced legislation designed to reign in out-of- control federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers. The bill, if enacted, will be a vital blow to the enforcement of radical environmental/Agenda 21- inspired regulations. The bill is called the Defense of Environment and Property Act of 2012 (S.2122).

A little history: in 1972, as the environmental movement was getting its start through popular efforts to stop pollution in our rivers and air, Congress passed the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (later called the Clean Water Act). The law prohibited the discharge of pollutants into “navigable waters” without a federal permit. The problems began when the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers made a power grab by enforcing the act over ponds, occasional mud puddles, and even dry lands by labeling them as wet lands.

The result has been disastrous to property owners and businesses, sometimes even leading to jail sentences to “violators.”

The result of such outrageous interpretations of the Clean Water Act has led Senator Paul to introduce his bill to do the following:

New Rand Paul Documentary to Be Released Before GOP Convention

(The Humble Libertarian) – As Super Tuesday primary and caucus results came streaming in from all over the country, a seemingly young filmmaker from Kentucky announced late Tuesday night that he would be releasing a low-budget documentary about Sen. Rand Paul’s successful 2010 bid for the U.S. Senate. The filmmaker, who announced the upcoming release in a video on YouTube using the handle jgmdavi, said that he plans to debut the political documentary by the Republican National Convention in August. (Watch the full video announcement below.)

The video announcement, which is clearly addressed to fans and supporters of Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and his father, U.S. Congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-TX), opens with the words:

“Many of you were there in November of 2010 when Rand Paul was elected to the U.S. Senate. Shortly thereafter he was sworn into office. Since then, in just over a year in Washington, he’s become one of the most recognizable names in American politics, and arguably the Senate’s greatest champion of the Constitution.

But how did he get there? Not everyone knows the story, the tale of an anti-establishment candidate who took on the establishment and won– twice. I followed Rand for about a year and a half in my home state of Kentucky, attending over one hundred events, recording hundreds of hours of video, and interviewing dozens of supporters.”

A perusal of jgmdavi‘s YouTube uploads confirms that he certainly was following Rand on the campaign trail in Kentucky, and likely has the volume of video footage that he claims to have in the promotional announcement.

The Kentucky filmmaker warns listeners that the film is a low budget project, “not a masterpiece,” and “meant to be enjoyed by a rather limited audience,” but that ” it does tell a story that has not been told in full, not in quite this way at least,” and that “for those of you who kept up with [Rand Paul's 2012] Senate race or experienced it first hand… the Rand Paul documentary will be a way for some of you to relive the experience.”

He also mentions “unexpected legal hurdles” that have delayed the documentary’s release before announcing that his main goal is to release the film before the end of the Republican presidential primary, deliberately timing its debut for maximum impact and publicity for the presidential candidacy of the elder Paul– who the documentary maker says will be in the film.

Senator performs charitable surgery

During a trip to Paducah Tuesday, Sen. Rand Paul traded his political hat for scrubs and a surgical mask and teamed with two local doctors to perform free eye surgeries.

An ophthalmologist by trade, the freshman Kentucky senator was forced to close his Bowling Green practice when he was elected in 2010. He said Senate ethics laws prevent him from receiving payment for any job outside Congress.

“One thing I’ve missed since I’ve been elected is getting to practice as much as I’d like to,” Paul said.

Paul joined Dr. Barbara Bowers, a Paducah ophthalmologist, and Dr. Laxmaiah Manchikanti, CEO and founder of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Tuesday for four pro bono cataract cases. The surgeries were done at the Ambulatory Surgery Center inside the Pain Management Center Pavilion on Lone Oak Road. Manchikanti oversees operations at the pain management center, and Bowers has her own practice in Paducah.
