LONDON, Ky. — Communities that had been littered with rubble and downed trees after a deadly tornado outbreak are now tidy, thanks in part to the thousands of volunteers who helped storm victims.

The twisted lumber, crushed cars, scattered roofing shingles, broken furniture and other debris that left communities looking like a war zone have been hauled away, leaving only the bare foundations where homes once stood.
