Trademarks are names, logos, or phrases that set your business apart from other similar goods and services that exist in the market. While it is a tedious process, a trademark registration guarantees legal protection for your business in the event that another person or business tries to use your mark without permission.
That said, when applying for a trademark, there are sets of guidelines, a specific list of goods and services called the NICE Classification (pronounced like “niece” not “nice”). This list is a reference when applying for a trademark so that the government is aware of what type of product or service you will be or are currently providing.
In this article, you will learn about all 45 classes under the NICE Classification and what products or services are in each one of them.
Trademark Classes of Goods and Services
There are 45 classes of goods and services under the NICE Classification. 34 of these classes are for products while only 11 are under the category of services. These classifications exist to make it easier to identify the function of the trademark you’re registering. It is a system that most countries use and it makes it easier for the Trademarks Office to examine your application.
It is also good to take note that these classes are to be factored in the cost of a trademark application because you will be charged by how many classes you file your trademark under. Here’s the complete list under the NICE classification:
